I thought I would do my wife a favor and set her up with Google voice for her voicemail on her phone. That was a mistake. It only lasted about one day. She did not like the quality of the transcriptions and refused to call the programmed number and enter her pin to listen to what was inaccurately transcribed. I’m sure she’s not the only one that thought of the service in this way. However, I wonder what she would think of google voice, if we had paid the extra fee for Visual voicemail from Verizon and it wasn’t much better. I’m sure Visual Voicemail from other cell providers surely can’t be that much better than google voice. I haven’t tried them, but I’m pleased with google voice and I highly doubt any other company doing pretty much the same thing could do it better.
This just proves one point, we still have a long way to go as far as voice to text transcription for average people. Nerds like me, will accept the occasional inaccuracies of google voice, especially considering the cost of the service. Yes, it’s FREE, so there is no cost.
This also taught me a lesson, don’t do any “techie” favors for my wife.
